The path to success

Notwithstanding impressive growth IBSA is still on the frontier of its future corporate potential.


IBSA is a privately-owned, global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Lugano, Switzerland.
Founded in 1945 by a group of Swiss biologists, IBSA used to be a small company with 60 employees and a few products on the domestic market.
Current management acquired control in 1985 and launched an aggressive development program aimed to enlarge the company assets and to create a competitive product portfolio to be extended to international markets:

  • 1985: acquisition of IBSA
  • 1987: patent for diclofenac epolamine approved
  • 1987: acquisition of Laboratoires Genévrier, France
  • 1992: acquisition of IBSA Italy and first registration of Merional®
  • 1993: first registration of Flector EP Tissugel®
  • 1995: acquisition IBSA Pharma, Hungary
  • 1996: acquisition of AMSA, Italy·
  • 1998: move to the current headquarters·and patent for hormones approved
  • 1999: opening of new laboratories in Manno, Switzerland and Quingdao Huashan Biochemical, China
  • 2001: acquisition of Gelfipharma, Italy
  • 2002: opening of the new plant in Lamone, Switzerland
  • 2003: acquisition of IBSA, Slovakia
  • 2004: acquisition of Rizhao Lanshan, China
  • 2006: opening of the new plant in Manno, Switzerland
  • 2007: opening of the new Turkish branch in Istanbul

Currently IBSA has a head count of 1000 employees and markets 26 products for 150 presentations in 52 international markets.
The company manufactures 30 million pieces yearly and the assets include 100’000 square metres surface and 50’000 square metres operating surface.
